Blake Roy Stepp (born February 4, 1982) is an American retired professional basketball player. After a standout prep career at South Eugene High School and college career at Gonzaga University, he was drafted in the second round of the 2004 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves. However, Stepp spent two seasons playing overseas, before retiring due to chronic knee injuries at the age of 24. After his basketball career, Stepp also played poker professionally.

Basketball career[edit]

A native of Eugene, Oregon, Stepp attended South Eugene High School. He played college basketball at Gonzaga University. In his four-year career with the Bulldogs, from 2000 to 2004, Stepp averaged 13.0 points, 5.0 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals. He was named the WCC Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. In 2012, Stepp was inducted into the WCC Hall of Fame.[1]

In the 2004 NBA Draft, Stepp was selected 59th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.[2] Stepp appeared in a handful of preseason games with the Wolves, but did not manage to make the final cut.[3] Near the end of 2004, Stepp joined Partizan of Serbia and Montenegro, spending there the rest of the 2004–05 season. After playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers during the NBA Summer League, Stepp spent the 2005–06 season with Valencia in Spain.

Stepp had represented the United States at the 2003 Pan American Games.[4]

Gonzaga Poker

In the summer of 2017, Stepp played in The Basketball Tournament on ESPN for team A Few Good Men (Gonzaga Alumni). He competed for the $2 million prize, and for team A Few Good Men, he averaged 10.5 points per game. Stepp helped take team A Few Good Men to the Super 16 round, where they then lost to Team Challenge ALS 77-60. [5]

Poker career[edit]

Upon his retirement from basketball, Stepp became a professional poker player, competing at the 2008, 2009 and 2010 World Series of Poker.

The Gonzaga Bay Off-Road Poker Run is on again!!! This Poker Run is part of the World Famous Alfonsina’s Resort Annual Memorial Day Weekend Fiesta. This recreational event is not a race and is open to all sorts of vehicles, including Motorcycles, ATVs, Quads, Side-by-Sides, Dune Buggies, 4-Wheel Drive Pickups and Jeeps, Baja Bugs—whatever you want to run. Everyone visiting or living in the Gonzaga Bay area and north to San Felipe and beyond (adults, teens, kids, and old-timers) are welcome and encouraged to enter in the fun.

The start/finish line will be at the legendary Alfonsina’s Resort Cantina. The course is about 35 to 40 miles long and will be clearly marked and easily passable. Cold Beer, Water, Soda and other Famous “Potions” and Snacks will be served at certain Secret Checkpoints in undisclosed locations by undisclosed “Merrymakers” from Alfonsina’s and Punta Final.

There is a 4-hour time limit to finish the run, so take time to enjoy the scenery, refreshments and socializing along the scenic and dusty trail. The run will finish up at the Cantina with an included “Ceviche Bowl Party”and announcement of cash awards and raffle prizes. Afterwards, everyone is invited to stay on for Alfonsina’s very tasty and generous Carne Asada Buffet as an extra.

Regular sign-up opens at 8:00 AM in the Cantina. Early sign-up will be at Don and Arlene’s Casa 20. The Riders and Drivers Meeting will be held at 11:00 AM outside the Cantina. Maps of the course will be handed out after the meeting. Start the run whenever you choose and travel off-road along the interesting and scenic course thru Five Secret Checkpoints, where you will draw a Poker Card contained in a sealed envelope from a bucket. After passing through all the Checkpoints you will bring your five sealed envelopes (your card hand) back to the finish line before 3:00 PM to be opened and counted by a “Somewhat Professional” Poker Dealer.

The Dealer will select the winning High and Low Poker Hands, and maybe a “Special Hand or Two” to win one of the Cash Prizes. You do not need to be the first one into the finish line at the Cantina to win a Cash or Raffle Prize; however you must be present when the lucky winners are announced at around 3:30 PM during Ceviche Bowl Party in the Cantina.

Your $10.00 entry fee includes: One 5 Card Poker Hand, 5 Raffle Drawing Tickets, Liquid Refreshments and Snacks at the 2 “Secret Checkpoints” along the course, and Tostadas at the Ceviche Bowl Party. What a deal!! T-Shirts, Souvenirs, Beer, Wine, Sodas and Margarita Cocktails will also be available for purchase at the Cantina before and after the Poker Run. Extra poker hands may be purchased for $10.00, however hands cannot be combined. Passengers who want to enjoy the refreshments as well as have a chance at winning a cash prizes and raffle prizes must also be entered. Each paid participant will be given a wrist band at sign-up to help us identify them as a participant at the checkpoints and finish.

At 5:00 PM; Alfonsina’s Internationally Famous Restaurant will once again be serving up their delicious and generous Carne Asada Dinner with all the trimmings for an additional cost of $15.00 per person.
